Business owners have been encouraged to leverage the streamlined trade facilitation initiatives at Apapa Port, which has emerged as a focal point for ease-of-doing-business in Nigeria. Dr. Babatunde Olomu, Customs Area Controller of the Apapa Port Command, made this assertion during the 2024 Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) Awards held in Abuja. The Apapa Command was celebrated for its exceptional performance, securing three awards in trade facilitation, revenue generation, and overall excellence.
Dr. Olomu emphasized the significance of recent procedural enhancements under the CGC’s modernization agenda, which aim to foster seamless trade operations. “We urge businesses to explore the opportunities offered by Apapa Port. Our focus remains on driving efficient trade processes and contributing meaningfully to the country’s economic development,” he stated.
The Apapa Port Command’s recognition at the CGC Awards highlighted its vital role in enhancing trade efficiency and boosting government revenues. Under Dr. Olomu’s leadership, the Command implemented innovative measures, including the establishment of a revenue recovery committee to address leakages in bonded terminals and a dedicated team to resolve complaints and disputes. These efforts contributed significantly to the Command generating approximately ₦2.1 trillion in revenue for the Federal Government in 2024—a record increase since Olomu assumed office.
Reflecting on the accolades, Olomu expressed gratitude to Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi and the NCS leadership for their support. “This recognition is a testament to the hard work and commitment of the officers and stakeholders who have demonstrated a high level of compliance. The awards will inspire us to aim higher. Trade facilitation remains a critical driver of revenue generation, and by ensuring simplified procedures and compliance, we aim to exceed our targets for 2025,” he remarked.
During the awards presentation, CGC Wale Adeniyi lauded the Apapa Command’s achievements as a benchmark for excellence. He described the event as a celebration of innovative contributions that go beyond routine operations, underscoring the pivotal role of Customs in national economic growth.
With its focus on operational efficiency, Apapa Port continues to stand as a model of ease-of-doing-business, enhancing Nigeria’s position in global trade and commerce.
